What is a dental crown and what can it do for me?

16 Apr

Crowns are also known as caps as they sit over the original tooth, covering the outer enamel. Made of porcelain, ceramic, metal or resin, they are used by dentists to strengthen teeth to prevent things like tooth extraction. The most popular are the all porcelain or all ceramic types as these give the most natural look and colour.

What is a crown used for?

Crowns are a dental job that may be used to protect fragile teeth from the risk of decay or to cover a tooth with a large filling that has already broken down. Crowns may also be used for cosmetic reasons to improve the appearance of the smile or to cover up discoloured teeth. Dental bridges are an alternative if you are unsure about crowns.

They are different from veneers and dental bonding as they are used to strengthen the tooth. In contrast, veneers and dental bonding will be used when the teeth are strong enough to support them.  They are easy to take care of with toothpaste and a toothbrush.

What is involved in the procedure?

The cost will vary depending on the type of material used and the dental surgery. Prices at the Essex dentist, Prospect Street range between £450 and £600 for example.

Your dentist will first drill the tooth into a suitable shape taking a mould of this, which is then sent off to a dental laboratory where the permanent crown will be made. In the meantime, you will be fitted with a temporary crown which will sit over the reshaped tooth.

Depending on issues such as how well you look after your teeth, a crown should last between 5 and 15 years.
